What is a Preset (Batch Controller) and Why It Matters in Oil & Gas Terminals

Thursday, January 15, 2026

In the world of oil and gas operations, precision and efficiency aren’t just nice-to-have—they’re essential. Every gallon of fuel, every liter of chemical, and every transfer of product must be measured accurately to ensure safety, compliance, and profitability. At the heart of this process lies a critical piece of technology: the preset, also known as a batch controller.

What is a Preset?

A preset is an electronic device that automates and controls the loading or unloading of liquid products at terminals, refineries, and bulk plants. Think of it as the “brains” behind the loading arm or meter skid. Its primary job is to ensure that the exact amount of product—whether it’s gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, or chemicals—is delivered according to the specifications set by the operator.

Rather than relying on manual valves or human intervention, a preset uses advanced electronics and software to manage the entire loading process. Operators simply enter the desired quantity, and the preset takes care of the rest: opening valves, monitoring flow rates, and shutting down the system when the target volume is reached.

Why Are Presets Important?

Presets play a vital role in terminal operations for several reasons:

  • Accuracy and Compliance: In industries where every drop counts, accuracy is non-negotiable. Presets ensure that the correct amount of product is loaded, reducing costly overfills or shortages. This precision also helps companies comply with regulatory standards and maintain accurate inventory records.
  • Safety: Loading large volumes of flammable or hazardous liquids is inherently risky. Presets minimize human error by automating critical steps, reducing the chance of spills, leaks, or accidents. Many presets also integrate with emergency shutdown systems, adding an extra layer of protection.
  • Efficiency and Speed: Manual loading can be slow and labor-intensive. Presets streamline the process, allowing operators to manage multiple loading arms simultaneously and complete batches faster. This efficiency translates into higher throughput and better utilization of terminal assets.
  • Integration with Terminal Automation Systems: Modern presets don’t operate in isolation. They connect seamlessly with terminal automation systems (TAS), meters, and flow computers, enabling real-time data exchange. This integration supports advanced features like automated ticketing, inventory tracking, and remote monitoring.

How Do Presets Work?

At a high level, presets function by controlling valves and monitoring flow through a meter. When an operator enters a target volume—say, 10,000 gallons of diesel—the preset calculates the flow rate, opens the valves, and starts the transfer. Throughout the process, it monitors the meter readings and adjusts the valves to maintain optimal flow. Once the target is reached, the preset closes the valves and signals that the batch is complete.

Many presets also offer advanced features such as:

  • Temperature and pressure compensation for accurate measurement
  • Additive injection control for blending products
  • Multi-product sequencing for complex loading operations

Beyond Oil & Gas: Other Applications

While presets are most commonly associated with petroleum terminals, their usefulness extends to other industries. Chemical plants, for example, rely on batch controllers to handle precise transfers of acids, solvents, and other hazardous materials. Similarly, food and beverage manufacturers use them for bulk liquid handling, ensuring consistency and quality in production.
In short, any operation that involves transferring large volumes of liquid with a need for accuracy, safety, and automation can benefit from a preset.

The Bottom Line

Presets may not be the most glamorous piece of equipment in a terminal, but they are indispensable. By automating critical processes, they help companies achieve the trifecta of accuracy, safety, and efficiency. Whether you’re loading jet fuel at an airport terminal or transferring chemicals at a manufacturing plant, a reliable preset ensures that the job gets done right—every time.
